In household cleaning, consumers first notice whether a product “flows like water,” “stays on a vertical surface,” or “holds its shape after dispensing.” For formulation and manufacturing teams, however, format is not a visual style but a set of interdependent engineering parameters. A 2001 study of acidic gel cleaners treated vertical-surface contact time, stability of solids, surface coverage, easy rinsing and easy dilution as simultaneous targets, and reported that rheology changes significantly with surfactant and electrolyte concentration. Pursuing viscosity alone can improve one measure while compromising another.
That is why “thicker means stronger” is not a reliable conclusion. Viscosity describes resistance to flow under specified test conditions; real use also involves shear thinning, yield stress, recovery and interfacial wetting. A product must remain stable in its container, move through a pump, trigger or tube, and may then need to slow down on a vertical surface. If it becomes difficult to spread or rinse, cling is no longer an advantage. BASF’s home-care technical material likewise discusses rheology modification alongside stability, continuous-process suitability and ingredient compatibility, rather than as a stand-alone thickness claim.
Packaging is part of format design too. A spray cleaner needs a controlled spray pattern under trigger shear; a gel must balance dispensing at the opening with residence on a vertical surface; a paste requires attention to extrusion force, local coverage and rinsing after use. ASTM E2346/E2346M evaluates household hard-surface spray cleaners across packaging, application, performance, after-use condition and fragrance, and notes that different soils and surfaces require matched test designs. A persuasive demonstration cannot replace validation that covers packaging, formulation and use boundaries.
Patent literature also shows that gel systems are often designed to dispense readily under force and recover structure at rest. EP3049507A1, for example, describes dilutable gel cleaning concentrates and discusses relationships among the gel, surfactant, acid and rheology after dilution. A patent publication records a technical route; it does not establish suitability for every use or prove the performance of any product on sale. Its relevance here is that format selection requires formulation, packaging and directions for use to work together.
EPHYON’s currently published product system includes both liquid and paste formats. The Kitchen Grease-Cutting Paste page identifies a 200 g paste, while the Liquid Drain Cleaner page identifies a 1.0 kg liquid product. This is not a performance ranking, nor does format itself establish efficacy. The more useful observation is that different use paths require a manufacturer to manage ingredient addition order, mixing and deaeration, filling equipment, package compatibility and batch stability separately. The China Cleaning Industry Association’s public council-member list independently records Tangshan EPHYON Daily Chemical Factory as an industry entity, but that record does not replace product-specific testing.
For OEM/ODM work, format should be discussed before packaging is finalised. A client should first define the target surface, use orientation, dose, residence and rinsing method, temperature range, fragrance, package and transport conditions, and only then choose a liquid, gel, powder or paste. Addressing rheology, packaging and scale-up stability during sampling helps reduce mismatches such as “suitable in the laboratory but unstable on the line” or “stable in the bottle but awkward for the user.”
Validation should also be separated by condition of use. At minimum, it should distinguish storage, transport vibration, low-speed pouring, high-speed squeezing, trigger shear, vertical spreading and post-rinse residue, using methods matched to the intended package, surface and temperature. ASTM’s public description states that its guide supports product development and quality control, not unverified claims. That boundary matters: technical evaluation identifies problems, while marketing statements require separate confirmation of repeatability, evidence scope and regulatory requirements.
The central question is therefore not whether liquid, gel or paste is the “more advanced” format. It is whether the formulation flows in the right way at the right moment. A mature decision sequence defines the use case and limits first, establishes rheology and packaging targets next, completes bench and compatibility testing, and finally brings filling, transport and user instructions into one production standard.
