Can food-container lids go in the dishwasher? Check plastic lids, bamboo lids and seals separately

Not necessarily. Dishwasher suitability depends on the specific lid and its parts, not just the material of the container body or seal. IKEA 365+ plastic lid 703.617.86 is labelled dishwasher-safe, while bamboo lid 503.819.07 is handwash-only; both have silicone-rubber seals. Clean removable seals according to the relevant instructions, and dry the parts before reassembly.

Read exactly what “dishwasher-safe container” refers to: the body, the lid or the complete set. A lid may combine plastic or bamboo, a seal, clips and a valve. Even if the body can go in a dishwasher, check the lid’s care marking separately. An impression that one component withstands water or heat is not a substitute for the complete lid’s instructions.

Even one product series can have different answers. IKEA 365+ round plastic lid 703.617.86 combines a polypropylene body with a silicone-rubber seal and is listed as dishwasher-safe. Rectangular bamboo lid 503.819.07 combines lacquered bamboo with a silicone-rubber seal, but its care instruction is handwash-only. The lid’s construction and model are more useful than the fact that both have silicone seals.

Seal removal also depends on the model. Sistema’s KLIP IT instructions recommend removing the flexible seal and washing it separately for a thorough clean. They allow warm, soapy water, advise against abrasive cleaners and scrubbers, and require the lid and container to be dry before reassembly. Follow these steps only for parts designed to be removed; do not force unfamiliar seals, clips or valves apart.

Storage boxes with valves may need to be taken apart before cleaning. For FRESH & SAVE CUBE containers, ZWILLING says to separate the silicone seal and valve from the lid before putting them in the dishwasher. Reassemble them according to that model’s instructions afterwards. Do not apply CUBE procedures to other vacuum lids or electric vacuum pumps.

Dishwasher placement may also be specified. OXO’s POP container FAQ allows the removed gasket to be washed on the top rack. Sistema KLIP IT containers also require the top rack and secure positioning to avoid contact with the heating element. These requirements concern the specified products; they do not mean every lid or seal can go anywhere in a dishwasher.

For handwashing, first check that the container permits the chosen cleaning product, then clean its food-contact surfaces and removable parts. Follow the food container’s care instructions as well; do not automatically apply general dish-soaking instructions to bamboo lids or specially constructed parts.

Finally, check that the parts are rinsed, dry and correctly fitted, as instructed. Where drying before assembly is required, do not hurry a wet seal back into its groove. If sealing remains abnormal after cleaning, check the fitting position and that model’s maintenance instructions. Adding more detergent or prying harder will not resolve an assembly problem.
