Rust spots on a stainless steel sink: should you keep scrubbing with steel wool?

Do not start by repeatedly grinding with steel wool. Rust spots on a sink may be linked to foreign metal particles, damp objects or cleaner residues; colour alone does not identify the cause. Check the sink model and finish, remove wet cloths and iron objects left in prolonged contact, and use soft tools to clean, rinse and dry as the manufacturer permits. For persistent spots, consult specialist care instructions or after-sales support. Do not treat ordinary dishwashing liquid as a rust remover or switch arbitrarily to acids or polishes.

Check the finish, not just the words “stainless steel”. BLANCO gives separate instructions for standard, brushed, Durinox and Dark Steel surfaces. Some do not permit polishing; some have specific restrictions on acidic cleaners. If the model or finish is unclear, check purchase documents and care instructions first, rather than assuming that experience with another sink applies to yours.

A rust-coloured spot does not establish its cause. Kohler’s troubleshooting page discusses foreign metal particles, hard-water deposits and chemicals used around the sink. BLANCO’s Dark Steel guidance also warns against prolonged direct contact with rusty iron objects. These are clues for checking the surroundings, not grounds to conclude from a photo that every mark is surface rust, a material defect or proof that stainless steel can never corrode.

Steel wool is not a more effective next step simply because you press harder. Kohler excludes steel wool, wire brushes and abrasive sponge pads; the relevant Franke and BLANCO care pages also exclude wire wool or rough tools. Do not repeatedly grind one spot to make its shine uniform. Both tools and cleaners must be suitable for the particular finish. Routine washing and wearing away a surface are different tasks.

Start everyday care by reducing residues. The relevant BLANCO guide recommends a soft sponge worked along the brushing direction, followed by clean-water rinsing and drying, while avoiding circular movements or excessive local polishing. It gives separate daily guidance for Durinox, so this procedure, together with just any cleaner, must not be extended to every surface. Follow the specific model’s requirements.

Check cloths, containers and nearby products as well. Franke advises removing wet cleaning cloths and containers after use, and not leaving salt, vinegar or fruit juice on the surface for long periods. Kohler also notes possible effects from splashes of adjacent worktop cleaner and open chemical containers beneath the sink. Look beyond the spot itself to persistent residues and unsuitable storage.

Do not transfer another sink’s acid-cleaning method to a special finish. BLANCO’s Dark Steel guide excludes acidic cleaners containing hydrochloric, acetic or citric acid, along with abrasives and polishes; this differs from some advice on its standard-finish page. Descaling, degreasing and rust removal are different tasks. A generic recipe does not override the restrictions for your sink, and cleaning products should not be mixed.

A dishwashing liquid is not a specialist sink rust remover or corrosion-repair product. Before using it on another surface, check both the purchased packaging and that surface’s care instructions. If spots persist, the surface looks abnormal or the finish cannot be identified, send the sink model and clear photographs to after-sales support before choosing a treatment.
