Stiff towels after washing: should you add more fabric softener?

Do not add more fabric softener just because towels feel stiff. First check their care labels, detergent dose, water hardness, loading, rinsing and drying. Too much or too little detergent, an overfilled drum and overdrying can all affect feel. Some towel manufacturers warn that softener may reduce absorbency or advise avoiding it. Follow the particular towel and appliance instructions rather than treating a change in texture as a signal to add more product.

Start by identifying your towel. Cotton terry, blends, towels with decorative borders and microfibre products may need different washing and drying conditions. Whirlpool’s towel-care guide recommends checking care labels because trims and different fabrics affect programme choices. IKEA’s individual cotton-towel page also specifies its own washing, bleaching and drying requirements. Judge by your towel, not the temperatures listed for another model.

Next check whether detergent was measured for this load. AEG explains that too little may fail to address water hardness, while too much can leave detergent on fibres and affect feel. These situations need different adjustments; stiffness is not a reason to increase every dose or always halve it. Consider package guidance, load size, soiling and local water hardness together.

Leave room for movement and rinsing. Towels become heavy when wet, and packing the machine tightly can interfere with tumbling and thorough rinsing. AEG and Christy advise against overloading, while Whirlpool recommends leaving towels space to move in the drum. When combining thick towels with other textiles, also consider weight, lint and colour compatibility.

Do not confuse fabric softener with measures for softening water. Christy discusses hard water and fabric-softener use separately: the former concerns minerals in the water and appliance conditions; the latter is a post-wash treatment for textiles. If your water is hard, check the detergent and appliance instructions. Adding extra fabric softener does not replace checking water conditions and dose.

Softness and absorbency are not identical measures. Christy and Whirlpool warn that softener coatings or buildup may affect towel absorbency. Towel City advises avoiding softener, and the relevant IKEA cotton-towel care page also warns that it may reduce absorbency. If the towel manufacturer says not to use it, do not add it for a softer feel or assume suitability for another textile applies to this towel.

Yipinjing 1.2kg fabric softener is a post-wash treatment. Before using it on a towel, check both that towel’s care requirements and the purchased product packaging; never pour undiluted product directly onto textiles. If a towel is specifically unsuitable for softener, focus first on normal washing, suitable loading and drying rather than increasing softener.

Finally, check for overdrying. Towel City warns that excessive drying or high temperatures can leave towels harsh and brittle; Christy also advises against overdrying. For tumble-dryer-safe towels, choose the programme according to the care label and machine. Do not arbitrarily increase heat or time to make them “cleaner”. Shake towels out after washing and dry them thoroughly by a permitted method.

If the unusual feel persists after adjustments, give the towel or appliance manufacturer details of the material, programme, dose and drying method. Feel alone cannot establish detergent residue, still less microbiological condition. Check identifiable dosing, rinsing and drying conditions step by step instead of repeatedly adding more product.
