More streaks on window glass: add cleaner, or check sunlight, grit and coatings first?

Identify the surface first. Ordinary window glass, coated glass, roof windows and electronic screens cannot be treated as one material just because they look transparent. VELUX UK directs users to identify their model from its data plate and find the corresponding instructions. If the coating or glass type is unknown, ask the window manufacturer before selecting products and tools instead of applying experience with one pane to every window.

Timing can affect the result. Marvin advises avoiding glass cleaning in direct sunlight, especially on tinted and coated surfaces, to reduce streaking. VELUX US guidance also advises avoiding the hottest part of the day. If streaks appear, check the light and surface conditions before concluding that too little product was used. Do not deliberately choose strong sunshine merely to make the surface dry faster.

Check loose grit and the soft cloth together. Marvin says to wet glass with clean water to loosen dirt, make sure no abrasive particles remain, and then use an approved cleaning solution and non-abrasive tools. VELUX UK likewise warns against removing dirt without first applying water. If a cloth contains sand or construction dust, deal with that first rather than rubbing the same area hard and repeatedly while dry.

Cleaning solution requirements differ by window type. Finally, separate the cleaning question from access safety. Do not lean out or climb dangerously to test a cleaner on a high roof window. Within safe reach, identify the material, deal with grit, choose permitted tools and remove the solution promptly. If these conditions remain unclear, extra spray cannot replace checking the instructions or guarantee that existing streaks will disappear.
