Can you wash cast iron with dish soap? Distinguish seasoning from enamel first

You can use dish soap suited to the cookware, but first distinguish seasoned from enameled cast iron and check its instructions. Lodge allows a little mild dish soap on its seasoned cast iron, followed by prompt drying and a light film of cooking oil. Enameled cast iron is generally cleaned with warm water, mild dish soap and soft tools after cooling, then rinsed and dried. Do not leave bare cast iron soaking; follow the relevant brand’s method for soaking enamel. A black interior alone does not identify the surface.

“Cast iron must never touch dish soap” is not a universal rule. Lodge’s myths guide explains that its seasoning tolerates a little mild dish soap and routine brushing. More foam does not require continually adding more cleaner. Whether a particular formula is suitable still depends on both cookware and cleaner directions.

Identify the cooking surface first. Seasoned cast iron has an oil-derived surface layer, whereas enameled cast iron has an enamel coating; a black surface can be matte enamel. STAUB’s official FAQ describes enamel inside and outside its cookware. Do not assume every black pan interior is bare iron needing reseasoning. If uncertain, check the model before attempting to scrub off the surface.

Soaking guidance is particularly easy to misapply. Lodge says not to soak its seasoned cast iron or put it in a dishwasher, and to dry it promptly. Le Creuset, by contrast, describes softening stuck food in warm soapy water after its enameled cast iron has cooled. These instructions address different surfaces; neither “soak it” nor “never soak it” should be applied to every pan.

Let enamel cool, then clean with warm water and a soft sponge or brush, avoiding cold water on a hot pan. Le Creuset also advises against metal cleaning pads and harsh abrasives, followed by thorough rinsing and drying. Lodge’s enamel guidance separately cautions against citrus-based cleaners. This does not make every citrus-scented product the same type of formula.

一品净 Original Dishwashing Liquid includes directions to wipe tableware or cookware with a cloth and then rinse with clean water. Check the packaging you have and confirm that your cookware permits the chosen cleaner and tools. “Original” in the product name does not establish dedicated compatibility testing with every cast-iron pan. For cracks, flaking or an unidentified coating, consult the cookware manufacturer first.

Routine cleaning should remove grease and food while respecting the actual surface. Dry and lightly oil seasoned cast iron as directed; protect enamel from scratching and abrupt temperature changes according to its brand’s guidance. If sticking, surface abnormalities or rust persist, do not rely on extra detergent or stronger scrubbing: check the care instructions for the model.
